2017 will bring much for full-time employment to business across the United States. 40% of employers project that they will hire full-time employees this year, which has increased from 36% at the start of 2016. This statistic along with several others gathered from a national survey conducted Harris Poll have provided the strongest hiring forecast in the past 10 years.
Several of the other statistics include:
Out of 2,391 hiring managers and Human Resource professionals, 30% plan to hire part-time employees (compared to 26% last year)
50% expect to add temps and contractors (compared to 47% last year)
Only 8% of employers anticipate a decline in staffing this year – a 2% decrease from 2016 – and 44% expect no change at all
3 out of 4 employers report being in a better financial position in 2017, encouraging them to add to their payroll
The recent change in Presidency has also had an impact on businesses and hiring; 23% of employers project in an increase in hiring and jobs due to the Trump Administration alone. The five job categories expected to increase the most year are information technology, customer service, production, sales, and administration.
Some additional projections are as follows:
66% of employers plan to increase salaries on initial job offers
63% said they expect employees across job functions to have some experience with social media
62% rate candidates' soft skills such as having a positive attitude and being team-oriented as very important when recruiting
55% said they will train workers who don't have experience in their field and hire them in 2017
47% expect to increase the minimum wage at their organizations
41% said they will reach out to candidates via text messages to schedule interviews
These projections tell us that many more Millennials are moving into, if not taking over, the job market, and the qualities that employers are look for are changing to fit a new audience. For example, hard skills were more important than a candidate’s softs skills when Generation X and Baby Boomers made up the bulk of the job-seeking market.
Regardless of the audience, employers plan to increase their staff no matter what.
