Tips to Prepare for Your 2018 Performance Review

It’s a New Year, and with it comes fresh starts, second chances, and an opportunity to improve yourself personally and professionally! You might even have a performance review coming up at some point this year, and why not make a resolution to prepare for it the best you can? We’ve even got a few pointers for you!
1. Self-Evaluate First
Start by being completely honest with yourself. It might be helpful to recover your initial job descriptions, carefully go through each duty and requirement, and ask yourself if you have fulfilled what was required of you. Has your position evolved since you started, or have you received a promotion? Consider how well you have adjusted since the changes took place.
2. Get Your Materials Ready
Have you been taking notes or recording highlights, awards, or praises you’ve received over time? Get those materials ready to share! Reviewing specific accomplishments and successes you’ve had throughout your position will help prove your value to your employer. You can even take your notes a step further and create your own portfolio!
3. Do Your Research on Raises
If you’re planning to ask for a raise during your review, it’s best practice to do some thorough research first. Start with looking up what the current salaries are for your position – You can use sites like Glassdoor to help you out. Also consider where you live while researching, as the cost of living can vary from city to city. Lastly, don’t underestimate yourself! Ask for a number that you’re comfortable and happy with.
4. Come Up with Questions to Ask
You can already expect your employer to ask questions of their own, but having some up your sleeve is a good idea, too. Asking questions will help you better engage in the conversation. It will also help you express your ideas and solutions more clearly, opening the line of communication.
5. Keep an Open Mind
If you feel you must be naturally defensive during your review, just remember that preparation is key. Keep an open mind and remind yourself to hear out everything your employers has to say – the good and the bad. If you do happen to receive negative feedback, take it as constructive criticism and commit to improving your work ethic throughout the year!
