One of the major take-aways the #MeToo movement has shown us throughout the course of 2018 is that sexual harassment knows no professional boundaries. It happens across all industries, and thanks to the #MeToo movement, the issue now has widespread visibility and awareness. With that has come new changes in Human Resources and the workplace. Here’s what you need to know.
Quick Overview:
What is the #MeToo Movement?
The Me Too Movement (or #MeToo Movement) with many local/international alternatives is a movement against sexual harassment and assault.
What’s Changing in the Workplace and Human Resources?
More Complaint Reports
Now that it is becoming less “taboo” and is encouraged to speak up and report sexual harassment when it happens, the likelihood of reporting and complaints from staff is much greater. Human Resources can prepare for this by updating policies and procedures with gender identity and sexual orientation in mind. This can be coupled with more progressive and methodical training with a focus on “bystander empowerment” – to intervene when sexual harassment occurs – as it has proven to be an effective deterrent.
New Reporting Options
With technology at the forefront, employees have more reporting options than ever. It is expected to see more use of hotlines and web platforms – email and live chats – to issue reports or complaints, in lieu of more traditional methods which included verbally complaining to managers or Human Resources. It should be noted, that despite more reporting options, it is still important for Human Resources to take preventative measures from sexual harassment from happening.
Investigation Changes
Internal investigations that are regularly conducted after a sexual harassment complaint or report has been filed are expected to lengthen and intensify. The qualifications of those who carry out these investigations will also be held to a higher standard. Proper investigations trainings for Human Resources is essential moving forward. It may be wise for Human Resources professionals to consult with external professionals or even employment law specialists in order to develop proper training.
New State and Local Laws that Favor Employee Rights
New laws favoring employee rights have actually been trending for the past few years and have only increased with the #MeToo Movement. Some of the recent laws include higher minimum wage rates, paid sick leave as a requirement, and the ‘Ban the Box’ movement. In April, anti-sexual harassment legislation was signed into law in New York. As more legislation continues to be introduces, it is essential that Human Resources ensure the company is compliant and aware existing and upcoming new laws as they relate to employee rights.
